Las Vegas sets Khalil Tate’s over/unders for 2018 season

Some lofty expectations for the second year starter

Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate was able to surprise the college football world when he stormed onto the scene in 2017.

The same certainly won’t happen in 2018.

Tate has been tabbed as an early Heisman frontrunner, been placed on a regional cover of Sports Illustrated’s college football preview edition, and Las Vegas is ready for the junior quarterback to put up enormous numbers as well.

Bovada released their over/unders for yards and touchdowns for notable players around the country, including Tate, and here’s where they set the lines for the Arizona quarterback:

• Total passing yards: 2550.5
• Total passing TDs: 20.5
• Total rushing yards: 1400.5
• Total rushing TDs: 13.5

Tate saw action in 11 games last year, and was the first player in program history to have three 200-yard rushing games in the same season. In his first significant game action, he set an FBS-record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback, notching 327 vs. Colorado.

He only threw for 1,591 yards and 14 TDs last season, but many people are expecting him to take a big step forward in his passing ability under new head coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. Tate’s 1,411 rushing yards would put him over this year’s Vegas projection, while his 12 rushing scores in 2017 get him pretty close to the new over/under.

For comparison’s sake, Johnny Manziel threw for 3,706 yards and 26 TDs in his 2012 Heisman Trophy-winning campaign at Texas A&M under Sumlin while also rushing for 1,410 yards and 21 TDs. Lamar Jackson had 3,660 passing yards with 27 TDs for Louisville last year in addition to his 1,601 rushing yards and 18 scores on the ground.

So let’s just say that if Tate is able to reach the high numbers set for him by Vegas oddsmakers, he’ll certainly at least be in the Heisman conversation come December.
