Arizona target Tevian Jones commits to Illinois

One fewer option for the Wildcats

Another Arizona Wildcats target is off the board.

2018 shooting guard Tevian Jones committed to the Illinois Fighting Illini on Tuesday. The 6-foot-6 Culver City, California native is the No. 117 player in his class, and was one of the top uncommitted prospects on the West Coast.

Arizona entered Jones’ recruitment late, visiting him on February 6 and offering him on February 8. He also had offers from Cal, Nevada, San Diego State, and UNLV.

National Signing Day is roughly a month and a half away, but the Wildcats still have zero 2018 commits.

Now that Jones is no longer an option, Arizona’s main high school targets remaining are five-star forward Jordan Brown and four-star guards Brandon Williams, Devonaire Doutrive, and James Akinjo.

Arizona has also been in contact with several grad transfers (go to our recruiting section for more in-depth coverage on them).

Considering Arizona only has six returning players — none of whom have a ton of experience — it is difficult to be optimistic about the 2018-19 season at the moment. A lot can change between now and next November, but Arizona’s inability to lure players is obviously damaging the health of the program.

That said, one could argue that saving scholarships, rather than using them on non-top-100 prospects like Jones, could wind up being a good thing long term if Arizona can eventually clear itself from the FBI investigation and return to its old recruiting ways in the next cycle.
