Arizona beats No. 4 Oklahoma to go undefeated in Mary Nutter Classic
Taylor McQuillin was darn near unhittable in Palm Springs
Five games, five wins.
The Arizona softball team went to Palm Springs this weekend and took care of business in the Mary Nutter Classic, taking down North Carolina, Missouri, St. John’s, Cal State Northridge, and No. 4 Oklahoma to improve to 13-1 on the season.
The Sooners are two-time defending champions.
No. 13 Arizona outscored its opponents 36-9 in Palm Springs, and Taylor McQuillin tallied three one-hit shutouts along the way.
The junior left-hander had a rough outing against then-No. 24 Oklahoma State to begin the season — Arizona’s only loss so far — but has been remarkable since, allowing three runs in her last 48 innings.
McQuillin (9-1, 1.06 ERA) only allowed one hit in a 2-0 victory Saturday vs. Oklahoma, which was hitting .342 entering the tournament. A two-run homer by Louisiana-Lafayette transfer Aleah Craighton was the difference.
Here were the final scores in Palm Springs, with the links to the box scores:
- Arizona 10, North Carolina 0 (5 innings) — box score
- Arizona 9, Missouri 4 — box score
- Arizona 7, St. John’s 5 — box score
- Arizona 8, Cal State Northridge 0 — box score
- Arizona 2, Oklahoma 0 — box score
Arizona is on the road next week when it will face the Texas Longhorns in Austin in a three-game series.
