Sean Miller ‘excited’ about Arizona’s hiring of Kevin Sumlin

Miller said UA’s new football coach is “excellent”

When Sean Miller found out Kevin Sumlin was hired to be the Arizona Wildcats’ new head football coach, his reaction was similar to most fans and players.

“I’m probably like everybody — excited to welcome him to Tucson,” Miller said Monday at his weekly presser.

Sumlin, who was officially hired Sunday, is a high-profile signing for the Wildcats. The 53-year-old won nearly two-thirds of his games in six seasons at Texas A&M, despite being in the arduous Southeastern Conference.

And in 2012, Sumlin was the SEC Coach of the Year after leading the Aggies to an 11-2 season and a trip to the Cotton Bowl.

Sumlin has recruited and developed some of the sport’s most exciting talent, too, like former No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett and Johnny Manziel, who was one of college football’s most prolific quarterbacks.

Miller, a Steelers fan who often uses football references in interviews, is well-aware of Sumlin’s past.

“Certainly an excellent football coach and I know he has an exciting style,” Miller said.

“I’m excited for our football players. It’s something that I’m sure they’re really excited about when you consider the success that he’s had as a coach coming from the SEC and some of the players he’s coached as well.”
