Ex-Arizona DB Shaquille Richardson signs futures contract with Raiders

Richardson gets another chance at an NFL career

Former Arizona Wildcats defensive back Shaquille Richardson has inked a futures contract with the Oakland Raiders, the team announced Wednesday.

A futures contract is essentially an invite to the team’s offseason activities, which gives Richardson a chance to audition before the 2018 season.

Richardson played at Arizona from 2010 and 2013, becoming a leader on defense near the end of his college career. He finished his career with 186 tackles, 10 interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Richardson was then taken in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was a member of the practice squad for a year.

He was later waived, and then he moved around the league for a couple of years, spending short stints on many teams’ practice squads, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers. But he never made his NFL debut.

In 2017, Richardson played for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, where appeared in every game, recording 74 tackles, four interceptions (including one for a touchdown), and a sack.

Now he is getting another chance to prove himself in the NFL, and hopefully he can seize it.
