Cal OC Beau Baldwin ‘in the mix’ to be Arizona’s next head coach, per report

Baldwin did some incredible things as a head coach at Eastern Washington

Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin is in the mix for the Arizona Wildcats’ head coaching job, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Rittenberg also mentions Troy’s Neal Brown as a possibility, which was also reported Monday by an Alabama-based reporter.

Baldwin, 45, has only spent one year at Cal and the Bears’ offense, albeit with different personnel, regressed from 22nd in scoring to 73rd under his watch.

Before he became Cal’s OC, Baldwin was one of the most successful head coaches in the FCS at Eastern Washington.

Baldwin was the head coach at EWU for nine seasons (2008-2016) where he compiled an 85-32 record.

The Santa Barbara, California native won five Big Sky titles (2010, 2012–2014, 2016) and was twice named the conference’s Coach of the Year (2012, 2013).

Baldwin won an FCS championship in 2010, and led EWU to the FCS playoffs six times in nine seasons. The Eagles ranked in the top 10 in passing and total offense eight times during Baldwin’s tenure.

Before that, Baldwin was the head coach at Central Washington in 2007 where he posted a 10-3 record.

Prior to that, Baldwin spent 13 seasons as an assistant, first with nine seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Central Washington (1994-2002) before four campaigns as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington (2003-06).

It is unclear what kind of recruiting chops Baldwin has, but he is a West Coast guy so it’s likely he has ties in states Arizona has to recruit.
