Arizona signee Brandon Williams putting up big numbers after knee surgery

The four-star point guard averaged a tournament-best 27 points per game in the Les Schwab Invitational

After missing his junior season with knee surgery, Brandon Williams has returned to the court and is looking better than ever for the Crespi Celtics.

The Arizona Wildcats’ signee was named to the Les Schwab Invitational All-Tournament Team in late December after averaging a tournament-high 27 points per game.

Here are some of the highlights:

The Encino, Calif. native led Crespi to fifth place in the 16-team tournament which included schools like Mater Dei and Oak Hill.

A few days after the tournament, Williams had 37 points and four assists in a Crespi win over Alemany.

Williams, who has been on a minute-restriction, is averaging 22 points per game in his senior season, shooting 30 percent from 3, 79 percent from the charity stripe, and 62 percent on 2-point field goals, per MaxPreps.

The 6-foot-3 Williams is the No. 41 player in the 2018 class and No. 9 point guard in the country.

Arizona coach Sean Miller said in November that Williams has McDonald’s All American talent.

“What we love the most about him is he can score and be a playmaker,” he said. “Great off the dribble, physically strong, can shoot the 3-point shot. The way the game has changed where you put different guards out there at the same time and don’t worry about what position they are, Brandon can be on the court with anybody and we look for him to come in and make an immediate impact.”

While Williams missed his junior season because of knee surgery, it was not because of an injury, Miller said (even though this L.A. Times story says it was).

“Brandon didn’t sustain an injury. That’s important to note,” Miler said in November. “He had more of a genetic thing with his leg that he was able to get fixed. To his family’s credit, he did at a time which is very smart. And he missed a lot of action. He wasn’t on the circuit this spring or summer.”

Williams signed with Arizona in November, but he inked non-binding financial aid papers, meaning he can still reopen his recruitment if he desires.

Point guard play hasn’t been one of Arizona’s strengths in recent years, but perhaps Williams will change that starting in 2018-19.

He sure looks the part.
