UTEP quarterback Ryan Metz out with shoulder injury, won’t play vs. Arizona
Just another reason why Arizona probably isn’t at risk of losing this game
The UTEP Miners will be without their starting quarterback Friday when they host the Arizona Wildcats.
Head coach Sean Kugler announced Tuesday that junior quarterback Ryan Metz is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.
Senior Zack Greenlee will likely be the starter, though redshirt freshman Mark Torrez could play, too.
Metz has made 14 career starts, and threw for 1,375 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions last season while completing 64.7 percent of his passes.
He was 28 for 51 for 259 yards and a touchdown this season before getting injured.
Greenlee, a transfer from Fresno State, started in four games last season, throwing for 695 yards on 52 of 103 passing, with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Torrez has one career pass attempt.
"Zack does a great job of handling the run checks, just like Ryan did. Zack has got an extremely strong arm, he can make all the throws,” Kugler said.
“You're probably not looking at as much movement stuff. Zack is not quite as nimble as Ryan is when it comes to escapability and those type things. But as far as the offense, he has a great understanding of everything. And same with Torrez. Torrez probably can do a little bit more movement stuff, a little bit more zone read stuff with him and allow him to make plays with his legs. So he brings a little more dynamic things when it comes to his legs. Again, I'm confident in both of those quarterbacks moving forward."
Given UTEP lost at home to Rice 31-14 last week, it was already seen to be extremely unlikely that Arizona would lose Friday’s game.
That’s even more true now that Metz sidelined.
