Arizona football recruiting SitRep: Wildcats add 11th commitment in Jake Peters

Arizona adds another commit; plus a look at how Wildcat commits performed this weekend

This week was not all bad for the Arizona Wildcats. They did lose Houston Cougars, 19-16, but they did add another commitment to their 2018 class.

Plus, multiple Wildcat commits were in action this weekend for their respective teams.

Let’s dive in with this week’s SitRep.

Jake Peters

We’ll start with the new addition to UA’s class, Jake Peters. Peters visited campus for the second time this weekend for the UA-Houston game with his dad (former Wildcat player John Peters).

It felt like only a matter of time until he committed to Arizona once he received his offer. The three-star prospect did suffer an Achilles injury last year but he is back and healthy for his Santa Margarita Catholic team.

I think Peters is a solid addition to the class and gives Arizona another great pass-catching tight end.

David Watson, OT/DT

Stats: 13 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 1 forced fumble

Watson’s Amphi squad is still having a rough season. Friday, they lost to Empire 54-0 to start the year off 0-3. Amphi has yet to score a point so far this season. Ouch.

Jhevon Hill, DB

Stats: 14 tackles, 2 INT, 1 PBU

Hill’s Cajon squad lost a very close game to Murrieta Valley on Friday. I wasn’t able to find any video of Hill in action but he did finish with five tackles.

Jaiden Dockery, S

I was unable to find any stats or videos of Dockery and his Lancaster team as they took on South Oak Cliff. The Tigers ended up beating SOC pretty easily, 56-20.

Jamarye Joiner, QB

Stats: 36-for-56, 584 yds, 8 TD, 1 INT; 28 car, 278 yds, 7 TD

Joiner’s Cienega Bobcats took on Nogales on Friday and won 43-0. Joiner finished 12 for 15 for 199 yards, three touchdowns and a pick through the air. He also had 68 yards on eight carries and a score on the ground. Since my words won’t be able to accurately describe how Joiner performed, here’s his highlights from the game.

Pay attention to his touchdown pass on the run.

Darrius Smith, RB

I was unable to find any stats or video of Smith during Dawson’s 17-14 win over Deer Park on Friday.

McKenzie Barnes, CB

Stats: 6 tackles, 3 PBU; 2 rec, 21 yds, 0 TD

Barnes and Edison are now 0-3 this season as they dropped their latest contest to Clovis West, 30-9. Barnes looked to have had some really good plays and continued to show some good man coverage skills. He is a very physical corner and at one instance it looked as though he had a pass interference called on him. But you have to like his aggressive playing style. He also showed ability to make solid open field tackles.

Jake Peters, TE

Stats: 2 rec, 21 yds, 0 TD; 12 tackles

Arizona’s brand new commit and his Eagle squad took on Bishop Alemany on Friday and came away with a 61-7 victory. Peters played a lot of defensive end and it’s clear that his knee is 100 percent healthy. As a tight end, Peters’ run blocking is already an aspect of his game that stands out.

Below are his highlights and near the end you see Peters set the edge, allowing the running back to gain pretty good chunks of yards.

Visitors

• Arizona hosted a bevy of visitors this weekend and we’ll start with the commits. Mykee Irving, Jamarye Joiner, and David Watson made their way to campus for the contest against Houston. Looking at Irving’s Twitter, it seems the visit went well and it’s never a bad thing to get Joiner and Watson back on campus. Joiner is Arizona’s lone quarterback commit and Watson is the lone o-lineman. As mentioned above, Peters was also on campus.
• Also on campus was 3-star Frisco, Texas wide receiver Tre Adams. At 6-foot-3 he has size that UA needs on the outside. He does have legitimate interest in the ‘Cats and this is one recruitment I’d watch closely as his process progresses.
• Also on campus were ‘18 OT Joey Ramos, ‘18 S Kenny Churchwell, ‘20 RB Bijan Robinson, DT Kai Golden, ‘20 DE Jason Harris, ‘19 CB Brandon Shivers, and ‘18 OG Jarrett Bell.

Thoughts on Saturday’s game

• Even though Saturday was a loss for the ‘Cats there were some positives. The defense was one major one. Houston only had 129 yards and 0 offensive points in the second half. I believe that the young players are starting to gain confidence and being more relaxed and focus rather than nervous.
• Brandon Dawkins had issues Saturday. There is no question about that. He missed wide open receivers multiple times. That either came from excitement, not setting his feet, throwing motion, etc. But he did have some really nice throws. His pass across the middle to Shun Brown for 35 yards was beautiful. My favorite pass of the night from Dawkins was the 30-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Poindexter at the back of the end zone that was called incomplete (I still think Poindexter had possession). It was right on the money and showed nice touch from Dawkins.
• Now we come to Khalil Tate. It was clear that his shoulder was still bothering him but he still managed to make some nice throws. My only complaint was him advertising with a big neon billboard where he was throwing the ball on the interception. It is something that can be fixed and will be. One last thing, even though no one likes to see their quarterback put himself into harm’s way, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Tate truck a defender.
• I honestly think the tight ends will be a part of the passing game this year. I can’t remember the last time I saw a tight end like Bryce Wolma catch five passes in a game. The current group is athletic so why not use them?
• Lastly, the offensive line did a really solid job on Saturday. They gave the quarterbacks more than enough time to pass and established really nice pockets. The only thing that needs to happen is for everyone to stay healthy. Oh, and Layth Friekh destroyed a defensive lineman on a play and it was wonderful.
