Arizona football recruiting SitRep: Wildcats lose commit, Jamarye Joiner shines, visitors, and more

Arizona is back down to 10 commits after losing one Sunday

The Arizona Wildcats won their season opener 62-24 over NAU on Saturday. They hosted a few prospects over the weekend but ended up losing a commitment on Sunday. There were also multiple UA commits in action for their respective high schools over the weekend as well.

Let’s dive into it in this week’s SitRep.

Josh Walker

We’ll start here. On Sunday, 3-star IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) defensive tackle Josh Walker announced his decommitment from Arizona via Twitter.

I can’t say what actually caused his decommitment, but I will say there are usually a lot of pressures playing at IMG. The program is a high visibility one and that can cause a recruit to go in a hundred different directions.

The Wildcats have multiple other defensive line targets they are pursuing and it’ll be interesting to see how those recruitments carry out the rest of the way.

Jamarye Joiner, QB

2017 Stats: 24-for-41, 385 yds, 5 TD, 0 INT; 20 car, 210 yds, 6 TD

It was another great game for the Cienega standout. He showed that he can pass the ball to all levels with zip or touch. He threw a nice deep ball for a touchdown, hitting the receiver in stride. He was also explosive in the run game, running for 40 yards on six carries and a score. He finished 7-for-12 for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

Issaiah Johnson, LB

I haven’t been able to find anything on how Johnson did during Los Al’s game against Lakewood. However, based on the score and total yards gained by Lakewood’s offense, I’d say he did pretty well. Los Al held the Lancers to -34 yards. No, really.

Johnson’s Griffins won 56-0.

Jaiden Dockery, S

There are no stats or detail about Dockery’s performance Friday night. His Lancaster Tigers lost to the Denton Ryan Raiders, 57-40.

Jaden Mitchell, WR

Last week, Mitchell announced that he was out for the season due to a knee injury. He is in good spirits and the good thing for him is he has 11 months to recover before his first fall camp with Arizona.

McKenzie Barnes, CB

Barnes and his Edison team suffered a tough 27-26 loss to Damonte Ranch. Below are Barnes’ highlights from the game. He shows great man coverage skills, with physicality and aggression mixed in.

Armani Adams, S

2017 Stats: 4 tackles; 1 rec, 7 yds, 0 TD

I haven’t been able to find any stats or news on how Adams performed during Lakewood’s 28-19 loss to St. Petersburg.

David Watson, OT

Watson’s Amphitheater squad is having a rough go of it so far this season. The Panthers were shut out by Flowing Wells 33-0. That is two shutouts in two games for Amphi.

Mykee Irving, DT

2017 stats: 4 tackles

Irving’s Coyote squad continues to roll this season, beating Salesian 45-14. It appears that the defense had a solid game, and the school’s football Twitter account posted that the front seven was having a great game.

Irving finished the contest with two tackles.

Visitors

• UA hosted a few visitors this weekend and we’ll start with one that surprised me. Andres Fox, a high 3-star from Mobile Christian High School (Mobile, AL), made his way out to Tucson for an official visit. His former teammate, freshman safety Troy Young, spent some solid time with Fox over the weekend. Fox had a solid spring and summer and landed some high-end offers. Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Stanford are just some to the schools to have offered him. It says something about where Arizona stands with him if he used one of his five officials to come out.
• Another recruit to make the trip to UA for the game was 2019 Williams Field (Gilbert, AZ) defensive back Noa Pola-Gates. Pola-Gates has already visited campus once this year when he made his way out for the Rich Rodriguez Polynesian Showcase in June. So far this season, the junior has put together a solid year on both sides of the ball. The ‘Cats are his only offer so far.
• Also visiting with Pola-Gates was his cousin, 2019 4-star Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, AZ) defensive tackle Matthew Pola-Mao. This, too, was Pola-Mao’s second visit to Tucson this year as he also made his way down for the Polynesian Showcase. Right now Pola-Mao seems like a long shot, but it’s starting to feel that Arizona is making some good ground in his recruitment.
