Arizona basketball recruiting: Shareef O’Neal hopes to be a one-and-done with Wildcats

Which means we would miss out on the O’Neal-Ball rivalry

We’re still a year away from seeing Shareef O’Neal in an Arizona Wildcats uniform, and once he gets to Tucson, don’t expect him to be there for long.

The 2018 recruit told TMZ Sports that he hopes to be a one-and-done in college.

“Yeah, hopefully,” O’Neal said. “I think I can be a one-and-done.”

The question came up when O’Neal was asked if the rivalry between him and UCLA commit LaMelo Ball, who is a year younger than O’Neal, would carry over to the collegiate level.

“I’ll probably be gone before LaMelo goes to college,” said O’Neal, who downplayed the magnitude of the rivalry. “That’s what I’m hoping for, so we probably won’t have to deal with that in college.”

It is not unusual for high school players to openly admit they want to be a one-and-done in college — current Wildcat DeAndre Ayton has made a similar declaration, for instance.

However, O’Neal is the No. 33 player in his class, while Ayton was in the top three of his class, so O’Neal’s position could certainly change as the time comes to make that decision.

Most, if not all, of the “rivalry” between Shareef O’Neal and LaMelo Ball stems from their fathers.

In fact, Shaquille O’Neal recently released a Lavar Ball diss track, which is absolutely fantastic.

Take a listen:

I, for one, would welcome the O’Neal-Ball rivalry making its way into the Pac-12.
