Arizona Wildcats in NBA Summer League: Nick Johnson scores team-high 17 points in Blazers’ win
Johnson continues to torch the nets in Las Vegas
The Portland Trail Blazers squeaked past the Toronto Raptors to reach the third round of the Las Vegas Summer League playoffs Thursday, and Nick Johnson led the team in scoring.
The former Arizona Wildcats guard poured in 17 points, all of which were scored in the second half, on 6-9 shooting.
Johnson was a perfect 3-3 from 3, and 2-3 from the free throw line in 20 minutes of play.
It was Johnson’s third straight double-figure scoring game with Portland, which beat Toronto, 91-85.
Through five games, Johnson is averaging 8.4 points per game in just 15.6 minutes. He is shooting 56 percent from the field and 7-8 from 3.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had nine points and eight rebounds on 4-5 shooting in the Brooklyn Nets’ 85-74 win over the Denver Nuggets in 20 minutes on Thursday.
Kadeem Allen played just 10 minutes in the Boston Celtics’ win 93-69 win over the Golden State Warriors.
The guard had one point, one assist, one steal, one block, two turnovers and five rebounds. Allen missed all three of his field goal attempts and shot just 1-4 from the charity stripe.
Brandon Ashley had nine points and four rebounds on 3-9 shooting in 23 minutes, as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Sacramento Kings, 83-76.
Kobi Simmons had three points and two assists on 1-5 shooting in the Memphis Grizzlies’ 102-98 win over the Phoenix Suns.
Gabe York went scoreless in five minutes in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 94-83 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Friday is reserved for the consolation round
Friday is an off day for teams in the winner’s bracket, but there will be still be a consolation round.
The only ex-Wildcats playing in it are Kaleb Tarczewski and Lauri Markkanen — and they face each other.
Markkanen and the Chicago Bulls take on Tarczewski and the Philadelphia 76ers at 5:30 p.m. PT (NBA TV).
There is a decent chance that neither one plays.
Markkanen sat out Wednesday’s game with a toe injury, while Tarczewski has gotten two DNP-CDs in the last two games.
No matter the result, Summer League will come to a close for both of them Friday, as as the consolation round is a one-day, one-game event.
Round 3 of the Summer League playoffs resume Saturday.
