Arizona football: B.J. Denker returning to Wildcats’ coaching staff

The legend is coming home

After a couple of years away, B.J. Denker is coming back to Tucson.

On Saturday afternoon, the ex-quarterback announced he would be joining the Arizona Wildcats coaching staff again.

Denker has spent the last two years as an offensive grad assistant at Texas A&M, working under Kevin Sumlin and company. Prior to that, he was on the Arizona staff as a student assistant in 2014.

And of course, prior to that one year on UA’s staff he was the Arizona quarterback, starting every game in the 2013 season. He threw for 2,516 yards that year, completing 61.2% of his passes. “Vanilla Vick” — as he liked to be called — rushed for 949 yards and 13 touchdowns that year. That was the 6th-most rushing TDs in a single season in Arizona history.

The 2013 season is the 4th-best rushing season in school history. Denker and Ka’Deem Carey led Arizona to an average of 264.9 yards per game on the ground.

Denker will be taking over the analyst role vacated by Miguel Reveles, who along with Charlie Ragle left Arizona for Cal this offseason.

The Arizona Stadium lobby still has a massive mural of Denker conducting the band after the 2012 Colorado game, so it’ll be nice to have the legend back on campus this season.
