Arizona basketball: Allonzo Trier named Pac-12 Tournament MVP, Lauri Markkanen makes All-Tournament Team

Trier averaged 20.7 points per game in the Pac-12 Tournament

The Arizona Wildcats are leaving Las Vegas with the Pac-12 Tournament championship trophy in hand after beating the Oregon Ducks 83-80 on Saturday, and Allonzo Trier will be departing with some additional hardware as he was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Trier scored 23 points on 12 shots and made a few clutch free throws in Arizona’s win over top-seeded Oregon, capping off what was a stellar three-game stretch for the sophomore.

Trier averaged 20.7 points per game in the Pac-12 Tournament, while shooting 48 percent from the field and 7 of 14 from 3 as Arizona beat Colorado, UCLA, and Oregon.

After being suspended for the first 19 games of the season for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, Trier has hit his stride in recent weeks, and head coach Sean Miller said Friday that Trier is currently playing his best basketball of the season.

And what a time for it to happen, with the NCAA Tournament beginning next week.

“We’re really excited about this and hopefully this leads into something special for us in the next tournament,” Trier told ESPN after the game.

Lauri Markkanen was named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team, as he averaged 20 points per game in Las Vegas, shooting 54 percent from the field.
