Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats stay hot, pick up 25-3 win against Hartford

The bats, the bats, the bats are on fire

The temperature wasn’t the only thing that was hot Saturday afternoon in Tucson.

The Arizona Wildcats launched themselves to a 25-3 victory against the Hartford Hawks Saturday afternoon with an offensive effort that was downright unbelievable.

But their defense, especially their pitching, allowed for the team to build such a massive lead.

Much like their matchup on Friday, the Wildcats let the Hawks get on the board first. Arizona’s starting pitcher, sophomore Michael Flynn, appeared just a bit shaky as he saw two runs scored (one earned and one unearned) in the first inning. It was worrisome for Arizona fans as the infielders gathered on the mound for a chat, but Flynn struck out two batters in the first and only continued to collect K’s on the scoresheet.

In the second and third innings, Flynn established dominance on the field by facing just three batters each time. To end the fourth, he struck out two consecutive batters. He lasted a total of five innings and allowed only seven hits. Pitchers Cody Deason, Ryan Gowens, Juan Aguilera, and Randy Labaut all saw just one inning apiece and allowed only four hits total.

Arizona’s offense, like usual, was off to a hot start, plating four runs in their half of the first inning. Arizona failed to score in only three of their at bats.

One of those innings was not the 5th inning.

While Arizona kept their cylinders firing all game long, the fifth inning saw a real fire ignited as Arizona dominated, scoring an incredible 12 runs in the inning — their highest-scoring inning all season. Seven different players were credited with RBI. Kyle Lewis managed to drive in runs in two separate at-bats.

A total of three Hartford pitchers partook in the 5th inning mayhem, further adding to their struggles that started Friday night in their 21-3 loss. Only two games through the series and Hartford has allowed 46 runs. Ouch.

Hartford attempted to come back in the 8th and scored their only run since the 1st. Arizona went on to score three more in the bottom of the inning, sinking the dagger deeper, ending the game 25-3.

The twenty five runs are the most Arizona has scored in a single game since they scored 29 on May 13, 2006 against Washington State. Saturday’s game also saw the biggest lead since the Washington State game. Talk about impressive.

After two strong outings, the Wildcats will surely be looking to seal the deal and sweep the series with Hartford. So far this season, Arizona is 10-0 at Hi Corbett Field. The final game will start tomorrow at 1pm so make sure to prepare for the hot desert sun.
