Arizona football recruiting: Wildcats commit Jose Ramirez likes Pac-12 style

The Auburndale linebacker is eager to get out to Tucson

Before Christmas Eve, most if not all Arizona Wildcats fans were unaware that Auburndale High School (Auburndale, FL) 6-foot-3, 195 pound linebacker Jose Ramirez was on Arizona’s radar. That all changed however.

Arizona offered the at-the-time South Alabama commit on December 19 and he flipped his commitment to Arizona five days later.

I had a chance to catch up with the brand new commit a few days after Christmas to talk about his commitment.

“Arizona offered my last Monday (December 19),” he said about his recruitment and communication with Arizona. “So far I’ve talked to Coach (Jahmile) Addae, Coach (Marcel) Yates, and (new linebackers coach) Scott Boone.”

“They recruited me as an outside linebacker,” Ramirez added.

There were numerous factors that made Ramirez’s decision to flip an easy one.

“Arizona is a better opportunity for me,” when asked about his flip. “The Pac-12 fits my playing style. They (Arizona) need me to drop back and cover guys, especially since the Pac-12 is pass happy. I also like that this is the staff’s first recruiting class. They made me feel like Arizona is home.”

Ramirez has never been to Tucson, but he is a mid-year enrollee. He should be making his way to the Old Pueblo next week and is excited to see it for the first time.

“Getting out there and seeing how it is,” he said about what he’s looking forward to. “I’m excited about getting out on the field and making that money.”

Ramirez is not a hard hitter, but he is a sure tackler and makes difficult open-field tackles. He is a sideline-to-sideline linebacker and covers a lot of ground quickly. He finished his senior season with 126 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 0.5 sack, 1 PBU, 5 forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.
