Arizona football recruiting: 2-star cornerback Tony Wallace commits to Wildcats

After a string of decommitments, Arizona football gets some good news

It hasn’t been the best week in recruiting for the Arizona Wildcats after a string of decommitments, but they picked up a commitment Saturday from two-star cornerback Tony Wallace of Desert Pines High School, the Las Vegas product announced on Twitter.

Arizona already has two Desert Pines recruits in its 2017 class in Tony Fields and Edgar Burrolla.

Our Gabe Encinas wrote about Wallace in June, and he’s a guy the staff has been tracking for a while. The 5-foot-10 cornerback had to sit out his junior year in high school due to transfer rules, so his recruiting process took a while to take off, but he held offers from BYU, Colorado, and UNLV.

Arizona’s interest in Wallace picked up recently, with safeties coach Jahmile Addae leading the way.

“We just started talking again, the last time I spoke with him was in the summer, but ever since he offered me he’s reached out to me and my mom,” Wallace said of Addae recently in a conversation with AZ Desert Swarm. “He is really taking his time to know me more.”

Wallace was waiting for an offer from Arizona and it didn’t take him long to commit after receiving it.

Arizona needs help in the defensive backfield, especially after key recruit Greg Johnson decommitted and Thomas Graham committed to Oregon. Wallace could provide that desired help.

Wallace played on both sides of the ball in high school, and helped Desert Pines win the 3A Nevada State Championship. He will be arriving at Arizona as a cornerback.

Wallace becomes the 23rd member of Arizona’s 2017 recruiting class, which ranks 29th nationally, according to 247Sports.
