Arizona football: Cody Ippolito out for season with torn ACL

Another knee injury for the senior linebacker

Last season, Cody Ippolito tore his ACL towards the end of Arizona Wildcats fall camp, forcing him to miss the entirety of the 2015 season.

This year, Ippolito tore it against the Utah Utes on Saturday and will be out for the rest of the year, Rich Rodriguez announced on Monday.

In six games this year, Ippolito was fourth on the team in tackles with 28, including four TFLs and 1.5 sacks. He’s also responsible for two of Arizona’s four fumble recoveries this year.

There is a chance that Ippolito applies for a sixth year of eligibility, but Rodriguez wasn’t sure if the team would apply for the waiver, and said no decision can be made until after the season. Cody’s long-term health would be the primary concern for letting him apply for that sixth year in college.

As for moving forward, Ippolito is still listed as the starting MIKE linebacker on this week’s depth chart, with Jake Matthews behind him. Matthews missed the Utah game with what Rodriguez termed “a bout with vertigo”. Michael Barton could also play MIKE, which would also get Paul Magloire on the field more at WILL.
