Here’s a look at the lesser-known aspects to this week’s game

So what do we know about the Arizona Wildcats’ second opponent of the season?

Grambling State rolled Virginia University of Lynchburg 72-12 last week at Eddie Robinson Stadium. The Tigers built a 56-6 halftime lead as junior quarterback Devante Kincade rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. GSU went with a two quarterback system during the game as sophomore Trevon Cherry threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns on an 11-of-15 performance.

"Punters are people too."

Senior Jonathan Wallace handled the majority of the kicking chores for Grambling State last week and he was busy. He converted all ten extra points and somehow had three punts for an average of 36.3 yards per attempt. It’s a rarity in today’s age of specialization to have a "Mr. Everything" in the kicking department, so it will be fun to watch two of them duke it out (maybe).

Good Times and Bad Times at GSU

It is well documented the Tigers had one of the best coaches in the great Eddie Robinson. However, it was very sad to see a strong program melt due to a facilities upgrade battle in 2013. The team actually boycotted a game against Jackson State in protest of their shoddy equipment, poor travel accommodations, and head coach firing.

STAY in your seats at halftime.

Grambling State is bringing the band to Tucson. IT IS A MUST WATCH. The game itself is both the undercard and the closing ceremony to The World Famed Tiger Band. One can pray the Pac-12 network televises the Grambling band instead of rolling through a bunch of game highlights that ended roughly eight hours prior.

What’s in the Grambling State Scrapbook?

Yes, I’ve seen The World Famed Grambling Band live. Every year, Grambling State plays Prairie View A&M in the State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl to open The State Fair of Texas. A ticket to the game gets the holder dual entrance to both events. It is always the first week of The State Fair, and a week before the Red River Rivalry.

A few years ago, I went to the State Fair Classic and bought a purple Prairie View A&M shirt and sat up in the new upper deck bleachers. PVU hammered GSU badly in the first half, but both schools’ band performances were absolutely spectacular.

Vegas has Arizona as a billion (rough estimate) point favorite and the game may be completely out of hand by the end of the second quarter. But UA fans, please, please, PLEASE stay in your seats for the real main event.
