Arizona basketball recruiting: Sean Miller visiting top prospects and updates on final lists

After a big week, we quickly update you on the latest in Wildcat recruiting

The biggest news of the last week was by far the commitment of DeAndre Ayton to the Arizona Wildcats.

Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander went into the Ayton story on their CBS Sports podcast. They also talked Sean Miller and Final Fours. I’d recommend a listen to this one as well.

With no national analysts expecting Ayton to come to Arizona, it pretty much blew the socks off of everyone. But Sean Miller will take it and won’t stop until he has filled all the needs he expects to have next season.

Visits

• Sean Miller visited five-star forward P.J. Washington last Friday in Nevada at Findlay Prep. Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, and NC State are also scheduled to check in with the dynamic player. Washington will also head to Tucson on October 21-23 for an official visit. The Wildcats will have to fight off Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, and potentially one other school to land him.
• Miller also used the new recruiting period to visit four-star forward Ira Lee last Saturday, taking a quick flight from Nevada to California. Lee will be in Tucson in a month for the annual Red-Blue game. If I were to put odds on who would become the next commit, it’d be him.
• Miller also checked in on 2018 five-star forward Miles Norris.
• After "resting" for a few days, Miller will again hop on his plane destined for Texas to visit Jarred Vanderbilt on September 14. Vanderbilt is a 6-foot-8 small forward and one of the best players in this class. His recruitment seems to be up in the air at the moment with no official visits listed.
• One day ahead of hosting Sean Miller for an in-home visit, four-star sharpshooter Brandon Randolph out of New York trimmed his list to four. Arizona was included. He visited Syracuse last weekend. He's expected to take an official visit to Tucson in the coming months.
• One of the best point guards in the 2018 class, Brandon Williams, announced he’ll be in Tucson for the Red-Blue game on an unofficial visit. The staff has done a great job thus far with this young man, but it’s still early in his recruitment.
• Two top U of A targets visited schools lately. Troy Brown checked in at Ohio State and also joined Collin Sexton at Alabama this past weekend. Both enjoyed it. While Brown won't be taking an official visit to Arizona, he’s still considering the school. Sexton has one more official visit left after scheduling trips to Oklahoma State (this weekend) and Kansas (Sept. 30). I've been told due to Barcello's commitment, Sexton is no longer considering the Wildcats seriously and the program is not expected to get him for his final visit.
• DJ Harvey, who has Arizona on his final list, visited Notre Dame last weekend. Some feel he’ll pull the trigger to the Irish soon and I’ve heard similar rumblings. He’s used up two of his five official visits (Notre Dame and Texas), which leaves him three more. Arizona is the only other team listed in his Crystal Ball, but he was scheduled for a visit to Louisville before canceling. Who knows where this goes if it’s not the Golden Domers.
• With the commitment of Ayton, the chances of elite shot blocker Ike Obiagu visiting Arizona have diminished. Both sides are currently in a holding pattern with nothing planned out ‘yet.’ I’d venture to say Maryland is in the lead.
• The coaching staff will be checking out five-star Quinten Grimes later in the week.

• Cutting Lists

  It’s the season for trimming lists and U of A has been on the wrong side of them this past week, though none have been surprising.

  Moving Forward and Other News

  The top point guard in the class, Trevon Duval, has left Advanced Prep in Dallas for IMG Academy in Florida. While the family says they weren’t worried about grades, the perception wasn’t best for him. Arizona is still in his top nine after shocking the prediction world by dropping UCLA in hilarious fashion.

  I’d be shocked if there were any more commitments to U of A before the Red-Blue game. But as we’ve seen before, if Sean Miller works his magic, anything is possible.
