Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona 7th best team at College World Series?
Can the Wildcats pull off another couple of upsets?
We are now just one day from the Arizona Wildcats’ grand return to the College World Series. While we’ll have previews coming over the next couple days, Jeff Gray, one of our Ole Miss writers at Red Cup Rebellion, has Arizona as the 7th best team in the eight-team field, with only UCSB behind the Cats. His reasoning? Lack of elite arms and the decent arms Arizona has are tired. Fortunately for the Wildcats, they will have had a whole week off, and only used three pitchers last weekend.
- Baseball America's preview of Arizona's bracket is very good
- The team officially got to Omaha on Thursday, and took the grand tour of the ballpark among some other things
- Alabama hired Louisiana Tech head coach Greg Goff to the same position. Why is this important? Because when I was talking to USD head coach Rich Hill about his close relationship with Arizona head coach Jay Johnson, he mentioned to me that Johnson may have heard from a couple of elite schools that are looking for new coaches, including Texas. It appears Texas will be going hard after UCLA’s John Savage and Oregon State’s Pat Casey though
- I don’t think that this guy or his editors have any idea that Trey Griffey hasn’t played baseball since he was 11. I’m pretty sure Arizona was always capable of reaching Omaha without having a Griffey on the team. "Arizona baseball didn’t get to benefit from Trey Griffey’s ability to smack a curveball over the fence." I don’t think you face curveballs when you’re 11
