College World Series day two recap: Florida, Texas Tech both lose

The National Seeds keep losing

Heading into the College World Series, only three of the eight national seeds made it through Super Regional play and made the trip to Omaha.

Now just two days in, all three of those teams have losses.

No. 3 National Seed Miami was taken down by Arizona 5-1 on Saturday, which is still the largest margin of victory of any game in the CWS so far.

Sunday’s games started with No. 5 Texas Tech taking on Big 12 foe TCU. The Red Raiders actually took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth, and it looked like they were going to move on in the winners’ bracket.

But Luken Baker had other ideas, as he got a hold of one on the inner half and hooked it around the left field foul pole to put the Horned Frogs up 5-3 in the top of the ninth.

Down by 1 in the 9th.

TCU hung on to win the game, and send Texas Tech to an elimination game on Tuesday.

The nightcap was overshadowed by some NBA game going on, but it featured No. 1 overall seed Florida facing off against Coastal Carolina.

The Gators threw Logan Shore against Chanticleers pitcher Andrew Beckwith, and it was Beckwith who was able to go the distance.

Much like the first game, it came down to a late at bat. Tied 1-1 in the 8th, Zack Remillard came up to the dish and lifted a ball to center. UF outfielder Buddy Reed misplayed it, resulting in a triple, and allowing Coastal to take a 2-1 lead.

They would win by that 2-1 score. Another interesting thing that happened in the 8th was that Florida put star pitcher A.J. Puk in the game. He only threw four pitches, the fourth one hitting a guy in the helmet. Puk is supposed to be one of the best starting pitchers in the country, getting picked 6th overall in the MLB Draft. Yet here he is being used as a reliever and struggling in that spot.

Not a bad day for Coastal Carolina, as CCU alum Dustin Johnson also won the U.S. Open.

So on Tuesday afternoon, it’ll be Florida and Texas Tech in an elimination game, and a guarantee of just two National Seeds making it out of the first couple of games. The Gators and Red Raiders will play at 2 PM PT on ESPN2. Coastal and TCU square off at 6 PM PT.

Monday’s schedule features UCSB and Miami in an elimination game. If the Gauchos win, we’re guaranteed just one National Seed in the final six. They’ll play at 11 AM PT Monday on ESPNU. Arizona plays Oklahoma State at 4 PM PT on ESPN in the winners’ bracket game.
