Arizona basketball: UNC-Asheville transfer Dylan Smith will join the Wildcats

The 6-foot-5 G/F will have to sit out a year, but then will have three years of eligibility at Arizona

The Arizona Wildcats, looking to finalize their roster for the 2016-17 season, have landed UNC-Asheville Bulldogs transfer Dylan Smith, he announced on Twitter.

Smith will have to sit out for a year before playing at Arizona, but then he'll have three years of eligibility with the Wildcats, as he played just a single season at UNC-Asheville.

In his lone season with the Bulldogs, Smith averaged a team-high 13.5 points per game, as well as 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. The 6-foot-5 guard/forward shot an unimpressive 36.9 percent from the field, but a lot of that had do with the fact that he took nearly seven 3s per game, and knocked down 34.9 percent of them -- a decent percentage considering the high volume. Plus, he was in his first year of college basketball, so his inefficiency isn't too worrisome at the moment.

Smith is rail-thin, weighing in at 170 pounds, but he has a long wingspan, which helped him average 1.0 steals per game. If he can add some weight, it's easy to see how he could have upside as a perimeter defender.

But, as of now, it's obviously hard to tell what Smith's role with Arizona will be. At minimum, however, he should serve as a safety net in case Arizona loses a significant portion of its roster, which is always a possibility.
