Arizona vs. Lamar recap: Cardinals blast Wildcats out of Texas 13-5

Too many home runs

The Arizona Wildcats may have technically left Houston, but they ended up at a launching pad on Monday, as the Lamar Cardinals launched four home runs en route to a 13-5 victory, dropping the Wildcats to 2-2 on the season.

Lamar, who hit one home run in their first three games, saved 'em all up for Monday, and it started early. After Cody Ramer gave Arizona a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, the Cardinals responded with a Brendan Satran grand slam off of Michael Flynn in the bottom of the second.

Two innings later, with the score tied at four, it was Jacoby Middleton's turn to go yard with the bases loaded, this one coming off of Kevin Ginkel. It was Ginkel's first batter faced as a Wildcat.

A couple of two-run homers in the 6th inning off Austin Rubick would put the game away for Lamar.

So what's up with Lamar's field? Well, it's pretty small:

Looked it up: Dimensions of Lamar's field are 325 down lines, 370 in alleys & 380 to CF. Not big. But Cats are hitting at same field.

But Arizona is not built to win a power game. Four of Arizona's runs came off of singles, and the fifth one was on a wild pitch after Jared Oliva tripled to lead off the 6th.

Of the six pitchers Arizona used, only Cody Deason was effective throughout his outing. He pitched the final two innings, striking out two batters while allowing just one hit. Flynn, Robby Medel, Rio Gomez, Ginkel and Rubick just did not get it done on Monday. Since Medel and Gomez are the only ones in the group that weren't pitching in their first career game at Arizona, it's not something to worry about yet.

The Wildcats are back in action on Friday as they head to San Diego for the Tony Gwynn Classic. They will play Tulane at USD's Fowler Park at 2 PM MT.
