Arizona baseball: Wildcats take on Lamar Cardinals Monday night

The last of a four game weekend in Texas

After taking two-of-three from the Rice Owls, the Arizona Wildcats took a short bus ride to Beaumont, TX to play a single game against the Lamar Cardinals on Monday evening.

Lamar is coming off a weekend sweep of Southeast Missouri State. The Cardinals held the Redhawks to just four total runs over the three days. Despite that, Lamar used eight different pitchers, as none of their starters went longer than six innings. All of these pitchers have pitched at least an inning and a third, so they may be a bit short-handed on the mound heading into this one.

Even though they won all three games, the Lamar offense has not exactly been spectacular. As a team, the Cardinals hit .221 in their opening series. By comparison, Arizona hit .226. The difference is Lamar has drawn only six walks. Arizona has drawn 17.

Leading the way for the Lamar offense is DH Cutter McDowell. First off, with a name like that, he should be a pitcher. The redshirt junior had six of the Cardinals' 21 hits, good for a .500 batting average. He also scored three times. There was one home run hit against SEMO, and that was off the bat of Reid Russell. He hit .300 on the weekend, and had a team-high three RBI, two of those on the homer.

Arizona hitters will face Joe Farley to start the game. The senior did not start a game last year for the Cardinals after transferring from Paris Junior College. In 16 appearances, he threw 18 innings, posting a 4.50 ERA. He had one of the lowest opponent batting averages on the team (.246), but also walked ten batters and had five wild pitches. This could bode well for the Wildcats.

Freshman Michael Flynn will be making his first career start. The 6-foot-3 righty has received high praise from the coaching staff and players throughout the spring, so it'll be interesting to see how long he lasts, and how effective he is against a sub-par offensive team like Lamar. Arizona has plenty of options to follow him on the mound as well, including Cody Deason, Kevin Ginkel, Austin Rubick and Tyler Crawford, all who have not pitched yet this season.
