Arizona football recruiting: Official visits, updated rankings, and injuries

Just some recruiting tidbits heading into this weekend

After practice on Tuesday, Arizona Wildcats Head Coach Rich Rodriguez said that the last two weeks were heavy in recruiting, as we've seen. This week, the staff will be out recruiting, and will be hosting some visitors this weekend as well.

That and more in this week's recruiting roundup.

Kapri Doucet will be on campus this weekend

When I spoke to Kapri Doucet earlier last week after he was offered, he told me that he will be on campus this weekend for an official visit. He also picked up offers from Louisville and West Virginia this week.

It's very early in Doucet's recruiting process, but I like Arizona's chances here.

Michael Eletise and his family will visit Tucson this weekend

Arizona's highest ranked recruit for the class of 2016 will be in town this weekend with his family.

Out of all the recruits I've talked to, I've never heard any more excited to be an Arizona Wildcat. I've had a lot of questions about Eletise's commitment, but I can assure that his commitment is firm.

Arizona commit JJ Taylor wins Pac 5 CIF Championship with Centennial

JJ Taylor scored five touchdowns in the Pac 5 CIF Championship Game over St. John Bosco by a final score of 62-52. JJ Taylor's Centennial team is now the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Taylor had 41 carries for 269 yards with his five touchdowns.

The guy is really fast, and he's likely the future of the Arizona backfield.

There's not a whole lot of recruiting to be done during the New Mexico Bowl trip

Arizona will be in New Mexico starting on the 16th. When Arizona was in the Independence Bowl two years ago, they did a lot of recruiting, and it translated pretty well. This time, there might not be a whole lot of recruiting being done next weekend.

The state has seven ranked players, and four of them are committed to New Mexico. One is committed to Iowa State, and another one is currently leaning towards Iowa State. The top recruit in the state, a 3-star OT in Henry Hattis, took a visit to Arizona already, but committed to Stanford.

2-star linebacker Kaelin Himphill in talks with coaching staff

Arizona was out visiting Kaelin Himphill. He's a 2-star linebacker out of Portland, Oregon, and wants to continue talking to the staff to set up a visit. He is saving an official visit specifically for Arizona.

It seems as if Arizona is a leader, as he is holding up his recruitment to set up that visit, and will decide on a school soon after that. Defensive fit and a family football environment are two things he's looking for in his future school.

He reached out to the staff at the beginning, but things didn't start heating up until about last week. Oregon State, Utah State, San Diego State and Washington State are all in consideration, with a few other schools likely on the way.

Arizona was once the leader in Battle's recruitment, and he told me that he would commit to Arizona after his visit. His visit was in late July, and he never ended up committing. West Virginia started coming at him hard, and I got a feeling all along that he would end up in the blue and yellow.

Khalil Tate and Devon Modster receive a boost in the Scout Rankings

Arizona will be adding two quarterbacks in 2016, and Khalil Tate will be joining the team in the spring.

Just recently, both got significant bumps in Scout's recruiting rankings. Also on 247, Devon Modster got bumped up to 4-stars in the composite rankings. The quarterback battle should be fun going forward.

Some guys who might be on the verge of getting bumped up: London Iakopo, Devaughn Cooper, JJ Taylor and Tyliek Raynor.

3-star running back commit tears ACL, has successful surgery

A 2016 commit for Arizona, Russell Halimon, tore his ACL a few weeks ago. He had successful surgery and will begin the rehab process soon.

Halimon is one of my favorite recruits in this class, and I'm almost as excited for him as I am JJ Taylor. This would likely set him back up until about fall camp, so that essentially means he'll be given a red shirt, or maybe the staff brings up the grey shirt conversation.

He's now the third Arizona commit to suffer an injury, as 3-star linebacker Jacob Colacion tore his ACL earlier this year, and Justin Holt suffered a broken fibula, as well. Turns out injuries are even hitting the recruits.

Rich Rodriguez says Arizona will have 10-11 midyear enrollees in January

There's a combination of grey shirts and high school guys that will be enrolling early. As far as high school kids are concerned, I know that Khalil Tate will be enrolling early, and you can assume that Halimon, Holt and Colacion will not be given their injuries.

With the grey shirts, Arizona will likely be getting cornerback Antonio Parks, 6-6 offensive tackle Keenan Walker, wide receiver Darrell Clark, 6-5 offensive tackle Harper Sherman, and 6-5 tight end Jamie Nunley.
