Arizona Wildcats redshirt freshman wide receiver Jaden Mitchell is out for the year with a knee injury and freshman running back Frank Brown Jr. will miss a few weeks with an MCL injury, head coach Kevin Sumlin said during his weekly press conference.
Mitchell and Brown both recently posted pictures on Instagram of them using crutches:
It’s the latest setback for Mitchell, who has been riddled by injury and illness his UA entire career. The Las Vegas-Desert Pines product greyshirted in 2018 after tearing his ACL in the first game of his senior year of high school. He appeared only in one game for the Wildcats in 2019 and battled COVID-19 for several weeks this offseason, causing him to lose 14 pounds and fall behind in his strength and conditioning.
Mitchell was one of the many receivers competing for playing time in 2020.
A former three-star prospect from Houston, Brown was Arizona’s highest-ranked 2020 commit and was expected to contribute immediately before sustaining his injury, though the Wildcats still have plenty of options at running back.
“What you see on his high school highlight, every time he touches it something exciting is going to happen,” running backs coach AJ Steward said of Brown during fall camp. “So we’re just trying to clean up his game and teach him that at this level. Not every player is gonna be a 60-yard huddle highlight. He’s learning to play the running back position and be more professional about the down-to-down approach.”
