Freshmen display power in Arizona softball’s first fall scrimmage

Arizona softball’s freshman class was ranked No. 1 in the country and it’s already showing why.

Newcomers Allie Skaggs, Devyn Netz and Sophia Carroll all homered Saturday as the Wildcats opened the fall ball season with a 12-inning scrimmage.

Carroll finished a triple shy of the cycle and all but one of the seven freshman position players had at least one hit.

Senior catcher Dejah Mulipola also homered while senior third baseman Malia Martinez had an RBI double and redshirt freshman outfielder Janelle Meono knocked in a run with an RBI single as the Red team won 6-5.

All five pitchers saw action along with former ace Taylor McQuillin, who recently rejoined the program as a graduate manager and is preparing to play for Team Mexico in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The next scrimmage is Wednesday.

It’s too early to take anything substantial from the first one, but it’s good to see the freshmen already producing since this class will be so critical for the program’s future.

The Wildcats only have two juniors and one sophomore on their roster, meaning the freshmen will be needed to carry the torch once the seven star seniors pass through the program.

It also shows just how deep Arizona could be in 2021. The Wildcats already have three players who have hit 20+ homers in a season, along with 2019 Pac-12 batting champion in Reyna Carranco and an all-conference talent at the hot corner in Martinez.

Throw some power-hitting freshmen into the mix and you have a lineup that can easily make a case of being the best in the country.
