Once the top high school talent in Arizona, DaRon Holmes will be playing college ball in the midwest, not the desert.

The 2021 4-star forward committed to the Dayton Flyers on Saturday over the Arizona Wildcats, Marquette Golden Eagles and California Golden Bears.

A couple days ago, Crystal Ball predictions had Holmes picking Marquette, but those prognostications gradually shifted to Dayton.

Holmes is the highest-ranked commitment Dayton has ever landed. 247Sports pegs him as the No. 39 player and No. 10 power forward in the 2021 class.

Holmes was the 2019-20 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game as a junior at Goodyear’s Millennium High School. He is attending Montverde Academy in Florida for his senior season.

Holmes is described as a “versatile post with pretty good size for the position and okay length.”

“He has gained a significant amount of strength throughout his high school career and isn’t maxed out yet but has a strong, chiseled frame,” reads his 247 scouting report. “Holmes is most comfortable as a scorer facing the basket and has a legitimate threat shooting off the bounce. He can improve his efficiency with better shot selection but can hit occasional shots from the perimeter as well. Has physical tools to better with back to basket. Rebounds well for position. Somewhat in-between four and five on defense but has chance to guard either position. Projects as high major starter.”

While Arizona is out for Holmes, it is picking up steam for 4-star guard Shane Dezonie, racking up three Crystal Ball predictions over the past three days.

The Wildcats just offered Dezonie on Tuesday.

So far Arizona’s 2021 class only consists of 4-star combo guard K.J. Simpson, though the Wildcats are expected to have a smaller class than usual since they only have two seniors (who can now return in 2021-22 due to the coronavirus pandemic) and no surefire one-and-dones.
