NCAA reportedly wants to begin college basketball on Nov. 25

It looks like college basketball could start earlier than expected, though later than originally planned. Don’t worry, we’ll explain.

Per insider John Rothstein, the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s college basketball oversight committee is recommending a Nov. 25 start date to the 2020-21 season. That would come just over two weeks after the originally scheduled beginning, but more than a month after what the Pac-12 currently has set for the earliest college sports could resume.

In August the Pac-12 announced that all college sports within the league had been canceled through the remainder of 2020. That decision mostly applied to fall sports, though it did impact the winter schedule, which for men’s and women’s basketball would have begun on Nov. 10.

Nov. 25 would be the day before Thanksgiving weekend, roughly around the time many colleges are anticipating ending in-person classes due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. That’s one of four dates the NCAA is reportedly exploring for the start of the season, per CBS Sports, which said the vote on a decision about winter sports would be held Sept. 16.

The 2020-21 season had originally been set to begin Nov. 10. The Pac-12 currently won’t start until Jan. 1 at the earliest, but an NCAA decision could move up that start date.
