Arizona grad Bob Baffert’s Authentic wins Kentucky Derby

Might as well just rename it the Bob Baffert Derby.

Baffert, the Arizona alumnus and Nogales native, saw one of his horses with the Kentucky Derby for the sixth time on Saturday as Authentic held off heavy favorite Tiz the Law for the victory. That ties Baffert for the most wins by any trainer in derby history.

Authentic, which closed at 8-to-1, was Baffert’s only horse left in the field after Thousand Words was scratched just before post time. Tiz the Law, which was a 3-to-5 favorite, made a late push to pass Authentic but jockey John Velazquez kept the horse out front despite starting on the outside from the No. 18 position.

Velazquez, a Hall of Famer, won the Kentucky Derby for the third time.

The 67-year-old Baffert’s other wins came in 1997, 1998, 2012, 2015 and 2018. His 2015 and 2018 winners, American Pharaoh and Justify, went on to win the Triple Crown.
