The NCAA has formalized the timeline for when college football teams can begin formal (read: required) activities in preparation for the 2020 season.
The Division I Football Oversight Committee approved a practice plan that is based on a team playing its first game on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Arizona Wildcats open one week earlier, Aug. 29, at home against Hawaii in a “Week Zero” contest, so their ability to move from voluntary to mandatory workouts starts sooner.
Here’s a breakdown of the preseason timeline for Arizona:
- July 6-16: Up to eight hours per week of weight training, conditioning and film review, with no more than two hours of film review per week
- July 17-30: Up to 20 hours per week of countable athletically related activities, with no more than four hours per day and at least two days off each week; of those 20 hours, up to eight can be used for weight training and conditioning, up to six can be used for walkthroughs and up to six can be used for various meetings
- July 31-Aug. 28: Official preseason practice window, with up to 25 on-field practice days allowed; the first five days are an “acclimation” period before getting into full pads
Currently only voluntary workouts have been allowed since June 1, with the Pac-12 approving its teams to begin informal activity on June 15. Arizona welcomed back the first batch of 20 football players earlier this week, with 20 to 30 more expected each Monday through July 6.
