Former Arizona safety Scottie Young Jr. commits to West Virginia

The most recent Arizona Wildcats player to leave the program has already found a new home.

Scottie Young Jr., who surprisingly decided to transfer last month, announced his commitment to West Virginia on Saturday.

The 5-foot-11, 201-pound Young started 30 games in three seasons for Arizona, including all 12 in 2019 when he finished fourth on the team with 66 tackles. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and an interception.

For his career Young had 157 tackles (nine for loss) and five picks, three of which came as a sophomore in 2018 when he also returned an interception for a touchdown against Cal.

Young’s time at Arizona included off-field trouble in 2017 when he was arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident. He was charged with a misdemeanor and suspended from all team activities, was held out of spring football in 2018 and suspended for the season opener against BYU.

After his departure, Young told The Athletic’s C.J. Holmes that he needed a change after feeling his career had gotten stagnant.

“I kind of just thought maybe a change of scenery, a change of school would help me with that,” he said. “The next step in my career is taking my game to a higher level, playing at a higher level.”

At West Virginia Young will be reunited with former Arizona assistant Jahmile Addae, who coaches the Mountaineers’ defensive backs and was Young’s position coach in 2016-17.
