Improved pitching, particular in terms of control, had been the big story for Arizona baseball early this season.

But on Sunday the Wildcats' arms returned to the poor form they had most of 2019, resulting in the most disappointing performance of the young campaign.

Wildcat pitchers issued 14 walks, hit one batter and threw five wild pitches in a 15-11 loss to the Rhode Island Rams at Hi Corbett Field.

The Rams scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning off three UA relievers, with the tying run coming in on a bases loaded walk and the go-ahead score the result of a wild pitch.

Arizona's seven pitchers also allowed 14 hits and only struck out four, the first time this season the staff failed to punch out at least 11 opposing batters.

Arizona tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring once and sending the tying run to the plate, but Branden Boissiere grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Four UA batters had multi-hit games, while Michael Dyer had three RBI in the losing effort.

Arizona plays its first true road game on Tuesday when it visits Texas before returning home for a weekend series with Houston.
