Arizona softball run-rules UT-Arlington but loses Sharlize Palacios to injury

The freshman catcher was in a collision in the second inning

No. 7 Arizona run-ruled Texas-Arlington 9-1 in six innings on Sunday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to go undefeated in the Easton Crimson Classic, but lost a key player in the process.

Starting catcher Sharlize Palacios was transported to the hospital after being in a collision at home plate in the second inning. The good news is Palacios had movement in all extremities and will travel back with the team to Tucson where she will undergo further testing.

It has been an injury-riddled season for the freshman, who broke her left thumb in January and missed the first week of the regular season.

When she’s been on the field, she’s been productive, hitting .324 with a homer, seven RBI, and five walks.

As for Sunday’s game, the Wildcats (17-3) overcame an early deficit to win their sixth straight.

Palacios’ replacement, Izzy Pacho, went 2 for 3 with three RBI. She drove in the game-tying run in the third with an RBI fielder’s choice, ripped an RBI single off the center field wall to make it 6-1 in the fourth, and smoked an RBI double down the right-field line in the sixth.

In between, Hanah Bowen had a sacrifice fly, Peanut Martinez blasted a solo homer, and Jessie Harper hit a two-run double and solo homer, her seventh of the season.

Bowen completed the run-rule by plating Pacho with an RBI single to right.

Bowen started in the circle and went two innings before being relieved by Alyssa Denham. Bowen allowed two walks and two hits, including a solo homer in the top of the first.

Denham tossed four no-hit innings.

Arizona returns to Hillenbrand Stadium next weekend for the Wildcat Invitational where it will host South Dakota, Boise State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and Indiana.
