The Arizona Wildcats added a playmaking linebacker from Texas on Wednesday in 3-star Derick Mourning.

Brandon’s Thoughts: I can not stress this enough....his offer list DOES NOT reflect his talent. His offer list reflects the worry that programs had about his academics. Now, Arizona would not have offered nor taken the pledge if they didn’t have a plan. WIth that being said he should be good to go.

Now, to his game. Mourning is a football player, plain and simple. He is a disruptive force off the edge. An absolute monster. He is explosive, fast, and effective.

The very first play of his highlights shows him chasing a running back down and making the tackle. Not only is his speed impressive but so is his vision, footbal IQ, and ability to dissect plays.

The rest of his film shows him being an absolute menace to QBs everywhere. His stats say it all: 20 career tackles for loss, nine sacks, and 20 career hurries.

This is a fantastic late get for the ‘Cats. He will benefit greatly from the new system and I can easily see him getting playing time early.

Gabe’s Thoughts: I really, really like Mourning. This is an absolute steal this late in the process. He is quick off the edge and has great athleticism and speed to track the ball down. Comes in with a great frame at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds and I love his scheme fit in a 3-4 defense coming off the edge.

He seemed to have slipped through the cracks due to academics and with a player of his caliber this is a huge win for the staff if he can get enrolled. I personally think he is a top five player in this class and a top 500 player overall. The new defensive staff clearly made him an emphasis so it wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up playing significant reps in his first season at Arizona, despite all of the young and talented prospects already on the roster.
