Andre Iguodala traded to Miami Heat, will sign contract extension

Andre Iguodala was prepared to sit out the entire 2019-20 season if the Memphis Grizzlies did not move him at the trade deadline, but he got his wish—and some extra cash.

The Grizzles traded Iguodala to the Miami Heat on Wednesday, and the former Arizona Wildcat will sign a two-year, $30 million extension with his new club, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The second year will be a team option.

With a team-option for the 2021-22 season, Iguodala is allowing the Heat to keep salary cap flexibility for free agency, league sources tell ESPN. If Miami misses on recruiting a max star, the plan would be for Miami to guarantee that season's $15M, per sources.

Iguodala is currently in the final of year of a three-year, $48 million deal he signed with the Golden State Warriors before being traded to Memphis last summer in a cap-clearing move.

Iguodala was clear from the start that he never intended to play for the Grizzlies, a rebuilding team that has actually been pretty good this season, currently sitting in eighth in the Western Conference.

That attitude rubbed some of his Memphis teammates (if you can call them that) the wrong way. Grizzlies and former Oregon Ducks guard Dillon Brooks said recently that he “can’t wait till we find a way to trade him so we can play him and show him really what Memphis is about.”

Sadly, the Heat do not play the Grizzlies again this season. Miami is reportedly sending former No. 10 overall pick Justise Winslow to Memphis in the deal. The Heat are 34-15, tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Iguodala, 36, averaged 5.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 0.9 steals per game with the Warriors last season. He won three championships with Golden State, including 2015 when he was named NBA Finals MVP.
