Arizona Marvelous Ideas: 2020 wing Ben Mathurin commits to Arizona over Baylor

If you can’t beat ‘em on the court, beat ‘em on the recruiting trail.

The Arizona Wildcats received a commitment from international prospect Ben Mathurin on Wednesday. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound wing picked the UA over the Baylor Bears, who downed the Wildcats in Waco earlier this season. The Canadian announced his decision at halftime of the Thunder-Raptors broadcast.

Mathurin becomes the second player in UA’s 2020 recruiting class, joining four-star wing Dalen Terry, who signed his National Letter of Intent in November. Arizona also has transfers Jordan Brown and James Akinjo set to become eligible next season.

Mathurin was unranked at the time of his commitment, but will now be considered a four-star recruit, according to Evan Daniels of 247Sports. Mathurin is originally from Montreal but has Haitian roots.

Arizona coach Sean Miller watched him at the Tarkanian Classic in December.

“Mathurin is an intriguing wing prospect with upside,” Daniels wrote. “He has good size, pushing 6-6 with long arms, an athletic build and impressive athleticism. Offensively, Mathurin is still an effective playmaker and scorer. He has good instincts, makes plays in transition, does a good job of making plays off the bounce and is an improving shooter from long-range off the catch. One thing Mathurin does really well is finish around the rim through contact and over contests. Defensively, Mathurin has potential to be a good multi-positional defender as he has the tools, athleticism and instincts to defend both wings and ones if he has too.”

Arizona still has a lot of pieces to add before the start of next season, as it’s set to graduate four seniors and likely lose three freshmen to the NBA Draft.
