One of the greatest basketball players in Arizona Wildcats history may soon be coaching at least one future Wildcat, possibly more.

Evan Daniels of 247Sports is reporting that Mike Bibby will be named head coach at Phoenix’s Hillcrest Prep, the school that produced Deandre Ayton and is home to some of Arizona’s top recuiting targets as well as a Class of 2020 commitment.

The 41-year-old Bibby, who played for Arizona from 1996-98 and was a key member of the 1997 national championship team, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft and spent 14 seasons in the league with six teams. After retiring in 2012 he went into coaching, winning five state titles in six years at his alma mater, Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix.

Allegations of sexual abuse led Bibby to not be retained by Shadow Mountain in February, shortly after winning a fourth consecutive state title with the Matadors.

Hillcrest’s roster includes 4-star wing Dalen Terry, a senior who committed to Arizona in July, as well as 4-star wing Puff Johnson—who just had an unofficial visit to Tucson last weekend—and 4-star wing Kyree Walker, a former ASU commit. Arizona also has made scholarship offers to Hillcrest players Michael Foster, a 5-star power forward in the 2021 class, and Sadraque Nganga, a 5-star power forward in the 2022 class.
