How did Arizona’s 2020 football commits fare in Week 6?

The Arizona Wildcats notched an important win on Saturday when they defeated the UCLA Bruins 20-17.

The future of the program was also in action, with 10 out of 12 commits playing.

Read on to see how the 2020 class performed in Week 6 of the high school football season.

Drake Dabney, TE

Cy Ranch (Cypress, TX) Mustangs: Lost to Cy Lakes, 34-31

Game Stats: 3 rec, 50 yds, 1 TD

2019 Stats: 16 rec, 170 yds, 3 TD

Dabney is now being used more in the passing game by the Mustangs than last year. And it is working in everyone’s favor.

Dabney is a fantastic run-blocker. He is also showing that he is a solid pass-catcher. He finished this past weekend’s game with 50 yards and a touchdown three catches.

On his touchdown catch, he was split wide and caught a screen pass. After making a nice move to gain some room and cause hesitation with the defender, he easily ran into the end zone. I love this play because it shows that Dabney is very athletic for his size.

The other two catches he had shows that he has started to become a dependable safety valve for his quarterback.

Jalen John, RB

Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, OR) Pacers: Lost to West Linn, 48-27

Game Stats: Not Available

2019 Stats: 51 car, 490 yds, 4 TD; 5 rec, 89 yds, 1 TD

My suspicions from Lakeridge’s game against Sherwood appear to be true based on this past weekend’s game against West Linn. Due to no stats for John, it appears that he was injured during the game against Sherwood. Hopefully it isn’t anything too serious. Here’s to his speedy recovery.

Will Plummer, QB

Gilbert (AZ) Tigers: Lost to Campo Verde, 24-21

Game Stats: 26-for-37, 306 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT; 11 car, 37 yds, 2 TD

2019 Stats: 132-for-208, 1,759 yds, 16 TD, 8 INT; 71 car, 364 yds, 7 TD

Plummer had himself another solid performance coming off his best outing of the year so far against Sunrise Mountain. He had some really nice QB draw runs and continues to show that he is dangerous with his legs.

We already know that he is an incredible passer and he had some doozies this past weekend.

Starting at the 1:14 mark, you see two consecutive plays where he avoids pressure, scramble away, and makes very accurate, strong throws on the run.

Another good one comes around 1:48 when he somehow, miraculously, avoids the sack and slings a bullet to his receiver for a completion.

Plummer is just so fun to watch.

Alphonse Oywak, CB

Kentwood (Covington, WA) Conquerors: Won against Beamer, 35-14

Game Stats: 5 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1 INT, 2 PBU, 1 fumble recovery (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 7 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 1 INT, 3 PBU, 1 fumble recovery; 9 rec, 215 yds, 2 TD (stats incomplete)

A caveat: all of Oywak’s stats came from me watching his film, so if they are wrong you know why. But from what we saw he had a great night on the defensive side of the ball.

He has incredible awareness and football IQ, allowing him to quickly dissect and react to a play. In numerous instances you see him dropping back only to quickly accelerate up to the line and defend against the run.

My favorite play I’ve seen him make this year was on his interception. Oywak is a great man-coverage corner, but in this instance he was in zone. He read the quarterback’s eyes and instinctively made a break toward the ball. He then tipped th ball, to himself, for a diving interception. Wonderful play.

Woody Jean, OL

Deerfield Beach (FL) Bucks: Won against Boca Raton, 49-6

Game Stats: Not Available

Deerfield Beach extended its winning streak to four games with an easy win over Boca Raton.

I was unable to find any clips or highlights of Jean during the Bucks’ shellacking of the Bobcats.

Josh Baker, OL

Eureka (MO) Wildcats: Won against Parkway South, 55-7

Game Stats: Not Available

Baker had another strong showing this past weekend.

I still get impressed watching him. He has a crazy high motor and always keeps his feet moving. He uses his hands very effectively and doesn’t let his man escape.

In his highlights you see him create multiple holes and running plays for his running backs to use. I stand by my assessment that his is underrated.

Dyelan Miller, WR

Centennial (Peoria, AZ) Coyotes: Won against Millenium, 35-7

Game Stats: 3 rec, 23 yds, 1 TD

2019 Stats: 14 rec, 157 yds, 3 TD

Miller continues to be one of the main targets on a team that doesn’t throw the ball too often.

Still, he is easily the most talented receiver on the roster for the Coyotes and it’s eas to see why, especially when he gets the ball in his hands.

You see him jog a short drive route and as soon as he gets the ball in his hands, he turns it to another gear.

He speeds across the field and uses his blockers to get close to the end zone and dive in for the score.

Khary Crump, CB

Culver City (CA) Centaurs: Won against Dorsey, 60-14

Game Stats: 3 tackles

2019 Stats: 25 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 3 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Culver City put on a clinic against Dorsey, wiining 60-14. Crump had a solid game, racking up three tackles.

I was unable to find any film from the game but I’ve included his midseason highlights below.

Cedric Melton, OL

Klein Cain (Houston, TX) Hurricanes: Lost against Conroe, 58-55

Game Stats: 42 car, 432 yds, 6 TD, 10.3 YPC

The Hurricanes went off on the ground, going for over 430 yards and 6 touchdowns. The offense held up its end of the bargain, however, it seems the defense did not as Klein Cain dropped a close one to Conroe.

Melton is growing every week it seems.

Much like Josh Baker and Woody Jean, he is incredibly mobile and athletic for someone his size. On multiple occasions he is used as a pulling tackle, and he’s really good at it. You see two plays in a row where he opens up a nice lane up the middle for his running back to charge through. In one instance, he felt he didn’t do enough so he sprinted down the field to continue to block for his running back.

There was one instance, when he pulled, where he missed his block in the middle near the goal line. It didn’t matter much as the back still found the end zone.

He is also becoming more solid in pass coverage and appears to be gaining more confidence in this area.

Tyler Loop, K/P

Lovejoy (Lucas, TX) Leopards: Lost to Braswell, 59-51

Game Stats: 6 PATs made; 3 FGs made (stats incomplete)

2019 Stats: 17 PATs made; 6 FGs made (stats incomplete)

Lovejoy lost their second game of the season in a close game against Braswell.

I wasn’t able to find any stats or film on Loop but based on the score, one can assume he made all his extra point and field goal attempts.

Of note: his season stats are also based on the score of the four games Lovejoy has played.

Defensive end Dion Wilson Jr. had a bye this past weekend. He and his Orange Vista squad take on the Lakeside Lancers on October 4th.

Long snapper Kameron Hawkins also had a bye this past weekend. Hawkins and Orange Lutheran take on the Mater Dei Monarchs on October 4th.
