Wildcat Wrap: Arizona football picks up big win vs. Texas Tech, soccer splits in Bay Area, and volleyball dominates in Kansas
Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports
It’s Monday, which means it’s time to recap another week of Arizona Wildcats athletics. Let us know in the comment section if we missed anything.
Soccer
- The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season in the Bay Area, falling to Santa Clara by a surprising score of 4-0. It was UA’s largest margin of defeat since 2016. Here’s our recap from Santa Clara.
- Two days later, the Wildcats responded with a 1-0 win over San Jose State to salvage a split on their road trip. Jill Aguilera delivered the game-winner by scoring from distance in the 30th minute. The Wildcats will need to get more going offensively next week when they host TCU on Saturday to wrap up non-conference play. The Horned Frogs are 6-2 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year.
- Arizona plays a fun high-press style of soccer, and here’s the backstory on that and why it is effective.

Volleyball
- The Wildcats went to Kansas and left with a perfect 3-0 record in the Kansas Invitational.
- Arizona swept the Jayhawks in straight sets in their new arena. Paige Whipple and Katie Smoot had 11 kills apiece. Arizona then beat Morehead State and Syracuse in straight sets to wrap up the invitational.
- Read about sisters Hina and Emi Pua’a, junior college products who are just the latest in their family to attend the UA.
Softball
- Arizona softball’s incoming recruiting class was ranked 15th in the country by Softball America, though they listed one of UA’s outfielders as a pitcher.
- The Wildcats started fall practice and did two days of Navy Seals training with The Program. Arizona did that last year too and it seemed to help them develop a strong team bond.

Women’s basketball
Men’s golf
- The Wildcats took second place in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at the Mirabel Golf Course on Sunday in Scottsdale. Arizona’s score of 809 was the program’s lowest ever at a 54-hole event. Freshman Aidric Chan made a strong first impression, finishing third in the event at 9-under-par.
Baseball
Women’s golf
- The women’s team teed off its season Monday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Minneapolis. You can follow the action here. The Wildcats have six new members, and only return three players from last year’s team. Haley Moore and Bianca Pagdangnan are no longer with the program.
Men’s tennis
- Sophomore Conner Olsen won a singles championship at the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, while freshman Hiroki Sakagawa and junior Stewart Block won a doubles championship.
- The other teams in the event were New Mexico State, Arizona Christian, Western New Mexico, and New Mexico Military Institute.
Football
- Arizona picked up a 28-14 win against Texas Tech thanks to a dominant running game and stout defense (wait, what?). Yep, it happened.
- Here is what we learned from the win.
- Here are some position grades.
- Here are the players of the game.
- Here’s what Kevin Sumlin had to say afterwards.
- Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly.
- Arizona is now 2-1 heading into its second bye week. When it returns to action, it will be hosting an 0-3 UCLA team. So, suddenly UA’s season outlook is looking alright.
Men’s basketball
- The full 2019-20 schedule has been released, so you can start planning your weekends out.
- Andre Iguodala wants out of Memphis, but the Grizzlies want to keep him around.
