Taking a look at who stood out in the heartbreaking loss

Saturday night was not how the Arizona Wildcats, and their fans, wanted to start the season.

In a game that saw the defense generate six turnovers, Khalil Tate create a lot of offense with his arms and leg, and the ‘Cats fallinf short by one yard, there were some players that stood out

Khalil Tate, QB

Statline: 22-for-39, 361 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT; 13 car, 108 yds, 0 TD

Tate did not have a perfect game, but he had the best performance for the offfense. He really had only one grave mistake (INT thrown in the endzone in the 4th quarter), but he did step up to the lead the team down the field on the last drive. Not only that, but he almost put the game in overtime after scrambling 30 yards as time expired, only to come up 1 yard short. Devastating.

Jace Whittaker, CB

Statline: 5 tackles, 2 INT, 1 PBU

Let’s be honest, there is not much to be impressed with on the defensive side of the ball. One thing that did stand out was how many turnovers the defense created.

Whittaker was a part of that and had himself a game. He started the turnover frenzy on the first drive of the game, picking off Cole McDonald on a route downfield. Whittaker was in the perfect position and just had to catch the ball as it pretty much fell in his hands.

He then moved inside and was tasked with man-to-man coverage on Cedric Byrd. It was here he picked up his second interception when he simply stepped in front of the throw and had a nice return.

Great way to see Whittaker back on the field doing what he does best after missing nearly all of last season.

Lucas Havrisik, K

Statline: 53-yd FG; 7 KOs, 5 TB, 65 yd AVG

Havrisik had a great game. He booted every kickoff for a touchback, save two.

Where he really did well was his 53-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. In a strange series of events, Havrisik converted 38- and 43-yard field goals that were negated by penalties.

Then there was another penalty and a timeout, but it didn’t phase Havrisik as he easily booted the ball through the uprights. Hopefully that kind of consistency is a sign of things to come for Havrisik, who has one of the best legs in the country.
