Arizona extends women’s basketball coach Adia Barnes through 2024

After guiding the Arizona Wildcats to their biggest turnaround in program history, women’s basketball head coach Adia Barnes has signed an extension through the 2023-24 season, the UA announced Friday.

The Daily Star reported last week that Barnes will earn $400,000 in 2019-20 and a $25,000 retention bonus after each season.

That is a sharp pay raise from the $235,000 Barnes earned in 2018-19, but it is well deserved. The UA alumna led the Wildcats to a 24-13 record that saw them claim the WNIT championship and break program and Pac-12 attendance records by selling out McKale Center for the WNIT championship game.

It was UA’s most wins since 2003 and represented an 18-win improvement from the year prior, the largest increase in school history.

Arizona returns its entire starting five in 2019-20 plus adds some interesting newcomers, setting them up for another successful season.

“Adia Barnes has built an exciting program and a culture of excellence since returning as the head coach at the University of Arizona,” said Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke.

Barnes is the latest of several UA head coaches to receive an extension. Soccer’s Tony Amato and volleyball’s Dave Rubio were extended earlier this year, while women’s golf’s Laura Ianello and baseball’s Jay Johnson were extended in 2018. Softball’s Mike Candrea was extended in 2017.
