Arizona commit, Oklahoma transfer Shaina Pellington to play for Team Canada this summer
Oklahoma transfer Shaina Pellington won’t be able to play for the Arizona Wildcats for another year, but she will get valuable experience this summer playing for her home country.
Pellington is one of 12 players on the Canadian National Team roster as it heads to Europe for a five-game exhibition tour ahead of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019 and Lima 2019 Pan-Am Games that will take place later this summer.
Canada is the No. 5 team in the world. It will face China, Belgium, and Spain in Brussels on June 14, 15, and 16, respectively, then play England in Manchester on June 18 and 19.
A native of Pickering, Ontario, Pellington was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2017-18 when she averaged 13.1 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the field.
As a sophomore, she averaged 13.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 41 percent from the field. The 5-foot-8 guard did not play in the Sooners’ final five games because of her play during practice and was also suspended for a game earlier in the season after violating team rules.
Pellington announced her decision to transfer in March and committed to Arizona in May. She will have to sit out a season before having two years of eligibility.
Arizona also added Penn State graduate transfer Amari Carter, who will provide a boost on the perimeter in 2019-20.
