Arizona extends volleyball coach Dave Rubio through 2023

The Arizona Wildcats have extended head volleyball coach Dave Rubio through the 2023 season, it was announced Monday.

Rubio has amassed 512 wins, 20 NCAA Tournament, eight Sweet 16s, four Elite Eights and a Final Four appearance in 27 years at the UA. He is one of just six coaches to log 500 or more wins at Arizona, the others being Mike Candrea, Fred Enke, Jerry Kindall, Lute Olson, and Frank Sancet.

The Wildcats won 22 games in 2018 before falling to Missouri in the first round of the tournament. Rubio’s salary was $144,200, according to school records.

“I’m grateful to Dave Heeke and the administration for their support and am excited to be a part of their continued leadership moving forward,” Rubio said in a statement. “I have called Tucson and the University of Arizona home for the last 27 years and to sign a contract that will keep me here over three decades is special. It is a testament to all of the players and coaches that have come through our program and many administrators over the years that supported the success of Arizona Volleyball. I’m thankful to my current coaching staff and cannot wait to continue our team’s growth in 2019 and beyond.”

Arizona is set to return five starters in 2019. The Wildcats have reached the NCAA Tournament eight times in the last 10 years, but have only made it past the second round once (2016).
