Arizona drops offensive slugfest at home to New Mexico State

New Mexico State scored in each of the first seven innings on Tuesday on its way to a 15-13 win over the Arizona Wildcats at Hi Corbett Field.

The 4 1/2-hour game featured 37 hits, 13 walks and four errors as the Wildcats (19-23) dropped their second straight at home and third in a row overall.

Starting pitcher Quinn Flannigan lasted just ²⁄₃ of an inning before coach Jay Johnson pulled the freshman, who allowed three runs and three hits with two walks. Four ensuing relievers each allowed at least two earned runs as NMSU (31-11) built a 15-7 lead in the seventh inning.

The poor pitching wasted yet another strong offensive effort for Arizona, which had 19 hits and led 5-3 after one frame. A two-run double by Dayton Dooney was the big early hit, and the Wildcats still led 6-5 before NMSU scored 10 of the game’s next 11 runs.

Arizona scored four times in the seventh and twice more in the ninth to get close, with Ryan Holgate’s two-run home run getting the Wildcats within two in the final inning.

The Wildcats return to Pac-12 play on Friday when they open a three-game series at Hi Corbett against the Oregon Ducks.
