Wildcat Wrap: Arizona men’s tennis makes NCAA Tournament for first time since 2010
It is a new week so it’s time to recap everything that happened regarding the Arizona Wildcats.

Men’s tennis
- Congrats to the Arizona men’s tennis team, which made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Wildcats will head to College State, Texas where they will face Oklahoma in the first round.
- First and second-round competition takes place May 3-4 and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to super-regional competition May 10 or 11. Each super-regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super-regional winners advance to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, where the eight teams will compete for the national championship May 16-19.
- Arizona is 17-7 this season, its highest win total since 2009.

Softball
- The Wildcats struggled in Berkeley and saw their 21-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 1-0 loss in extra innings. Arizona won Friday and Sunday’s games, but trailed in both.
- With the loss, the Wildcats are now even with UCLA atop the conference standings heading into the final two weeks of the season. The teams face each other to close out the regular season, but before then, Arizona hosts Washington and UCLA travels to Stanford. We outlined what needs to happen for the Wildcats to win the Pac-12 title.
- From Jenna Kean’s speed to Hillary Edior’s fostering personality, the two Wildcats are aiding the team in the homestretch of the season.
- Coach Mike Candrea was “shocked” the NCAA voted against a third assistant for softball.
Baseball
- Losing 11-9 to Grand Canyon University on Tuesday before traveling to Stanford for a weekend series wasn’t ideal for the ‘Cats (19-22, 7-14 Pac-12).
- Stanford sits atop the Pac-12, but the ‘Cats put together their best game of the season, upsetting the Cardinal 6-3 on Friday.
- Nick Quintana hit a home run and drove in two runs, while Justin Wylie had three RBIs.
- The ‘Cats couldn’t clinch the series on Saturday, losing 13-3.
- Stanford put up the same amount of runs on Sunday as on Saturday, winning 13-5.
- Arizona hosts New Mexico State on Tuesday and then welcomes Oregon for a weekend series.
Beach Volleyball
- Arizona faced No. 1 UCLA and No. 3 California in the Pac-12 Championships on Friday, losing both matches. The ‘Cats lost 3-0 to UCLA and 3-1 to Cal.
- On Thursday, Arizona swept Stanford 5-0.
Volleyball
- Mahina “Hina” Pua’a signed with the ‘Cats this week. A transfer from Iowa Western Community College, she was a First-Team NJCAA All-American this season.
Women’s Golf
- The Wildcats begin their quest to defend their national title on May 6 in East Lansing, Michigan in the NCAA Regionals. UA is the No. 2 seed in its 18-team region.
- The top six teams from each regional advance to the national championship in Arkansas which takes place May 17-22.
Men’s Golf
- UA placed ninth this week at the Pac-12 Championships. Trevor Werbylo was the top Wildcat golfer, finishing in the top-25.
- The selection show is on Wednesday, and the team is hoping to make back-to-back regional appearances.
Soccer

Women’s Tennis
- UA saw its season end on Thursday after losing 4-0 to second seed UCLA in the Pac-12 Championships.
- The ‘Cats upset Utah on Wednesday, which was the first tournament win in program history.
Track and Field
- Justice Summerset, Karolina Pahlitzsch and James Smith set all-time Arizona records on Saturday in the Desert Heat Classic.
- Summerset had a clearance of 2.25m in the high jump and it puts him fifth in the school record book.
- Smith’s time of 50.11 in the 400-meter hurdles is now the second best in school history.
- Pahlitzsch is now sixth on the NCAA list after she ran 57.43 in the 400-meter hurdles.
- The team hosts the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships beginning on Saturday.
Football
- The spectacle that is the NFL Draft is over and four former UA players found their way onto teams. PJ Johnson was selected in the seventh round by the Detroit Lions. He was the only UA player drafted. The Lions like his versatility.
- Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Shawn Poindexter both signed with the San Francisco 49ers as undrafted free agents.
- Nick Reinhardt signed an UDFA deal with the Browns.
- Arizona has one of worst track records in the Pac-12 when it comes to getting players drafted.

Men’s Basketball
- Steve Kerr dropped a truth bomb on James Harden by telling him Arizona is a better school than ASU.
- Just days after being named the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings, a TMZ report came out about Luke Walton being under investigation for sexual assault in a hotel room in April of 2016.
- Five-star recruit Josh Green announced he recently underwent shoulder surgery.
- Chase Jeter didn’t enter the NBA Draft, which means he is returning to Arizona.
- Arizona landed UC Irvine transfer Max Hazzard and here is what he will add to the team.
- Dusan Ristic won a championship in Serbia.
- Tapes played at the federal basketball trial detailed some of Book Richardson’s wrongdoings.
