Arizona baseball wins 10th straight game to complete regular season

Is that enough to get the Wildcats into the postseason?

The Arizona Wildcats have done all they can to show they deserve to be in the NCAA tournament. Now it’s up to the selection committee to either agree or disagree.

If the committee puts extra weight on the end of the season, Arizona should easily be in.

Arizona (32-24, 15-14 Pac-12) won its 10^th consecutive game on Saturday, crushing lowly Washington State 15-7 in Pullman in its last chance to directly influence its postseason hopes. It was the Wildcats’ third consecutive conference series sweep and 12^th win in 13 games, and as important as anything gave them a winning conference record along with a sixth place finish in the top-heavy Pac-12.

A five-run top of the first set the tone for another dominant offense performance, a theme during the win streak. Arizona cranked out 13 hits and drew five walks, and ended up outscoring its foes 131-45 during the 10-game win streak.

Justin Wylie hit two solo home runs, one in the fifth and the other in the sixth, the latter coming after Dayton Dooney hit a two-run shot as part of a second five-run inning. Every Arizona starter had at least one hit, one RBI and scored at least once.

Quinn Flanagan (8-3) allowed four runs and six hits in six innings for the victory, a night after coming on in relief in the eighth inning of a 5-4 game to throw one pitch for a rally killing groundout.

With the regular season over, Arizona’s RPI sits at 47, one spot better than a year ago when it was kept out of the tourney despite a 34-22 overall record but 14-16 Pac-12 mark. Both Baseball America and D1Baseball had the Wildcats on the outside looking in as of Saturday morning.

The 64-team NCAA field will be announced Monday at 9 a.m. PT.
