Arizona OL Donovan Laie was a top pass protector in Pac-12 in 2018, per PFF

The transition from high school to college football isn’t supposed to be easy, but evidently it was for freshman Donovan Laie.

The Arizona Wildcats offensive lineman was third in the Pac-12 in pressure rate allowed in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus. Laie only allowed a quarterback pressure on 2.1 percent of his snaps.

USC’s Chris Brown and Cal’s Patrick Mekari were the only other guards/tackles to post better rates.

Laie started in all 12 games in 2018, making three starts at left tackle and nine starts at right tackle.

The Southern California native was a three-star recruit coming out of Oceanside High School, per 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot-4, 318-pound Laie also held offers from Colorado, Colorado State, Hawaii, Oregon State and San Diego State among others.

Laie is penciled in to be a starter in 2019, though it remains to be see which position he will play. Senior left tackle Layth Friekh exhausted his final year of eligibility, so it seems safe to assume that position is Laie’s to lose.
