Alyssa Denham throws no-hitter as Arizona softball sweeps Oregon State

Alyssa Denham celebrated her 21st birthday in style Sunday, tossing a no-hitter as Arizona softball beat Oregon State 4-0 in Corvallis to complete the series sweep.

The junior struck out eight and walked three. Arizona played clean defense behind her, going all seven innings without an error.

It’s the 92nd no-hitter in UA history.

Denham walked the very first batter she faced, before retiring nine straight. She issued two more walks in the fourth but avoided any damage.

The Wildcats scored in each of the first three innings to give Denham a workable cushion. Jessie Harper continued her power surge by belting her Pac-12-best 17th homer of the season in the first inning, before Malia Martinez hit a solo shot of her own in the second.

Dejah Mulipola added an RBI groundout in the third and Harper scored later in that frame on a double steal.

It was a breakout outing for Denham (7-2, 3.02), who had been struggling recently, allowing at least three runs in each of her four previous starts.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 24-7 overall and 6-0 in the Pac-12. They host a three-game series against No. 18 Arizona State next weekend.
